Fukio Mitsuji, for example, was one of the first arcade machine designers to focus on cooperative play: Instead of fighting each other, two players jump through the levels simultaneously, supporting each other on their way to the final. However, a few innovative tricks make Bubble Bobble a title that is still played more persistently and discussed more intensively than most other exponents of the glamorous arcade era. Surprising new level-architectures (which can also turn a huge heart or a Space Invaders reference into a playing field), tempting collectibles from bananas to tartlets to diamonds, a dozen imaginative opponents as well as special bubbles, which release fire, lightning or a flood of water when bursting, already provide a lot of variety and motivation. Besides, the bubbles floating upwards can also be used as an aid to traverse the screen-sized levels: They can't carry the weight of the dinosaurs, but by jumping on them the player can reach higher areas. And so he invents the eponymous mechanics: The cute heroes spit bubbles, which wrap the opponents and let them float - a targeted jump, and the bubbles burst, whereby the knocked out victims swirl across the screen and turn into bonus objects, which are swiftly collected for points. Fukio Mitsuji, who designs the game for the Japanese arcade pros and Space Invaders makers Taito, wants to come up with brand new, equally thrilling and cheerful gameplay. What at first looks like an imaginative, yet quite typical jump'n'run game of the arcade era, soon proves to be a unique, clever and highly motivating skill test. To regain their human form - and their Baron-abducted girlfriends Patty and Betty - they must traverse a hundred enemy-riddled caves and hunt down a grim, brandy-bottle-throwing end boss. The heroes are Bub and Bob, two incredibly cute mini dinosaurs who are actually the two boys Bubblun and Bobblun, enchanted by the evil beluga whale Baron of Blubba. The result: The machine and its countless conversions and sequels become legendary, its heroes immortal. In 1986 Bubble Bobble achieves all this - and a few more things that have been unusual for the arcade to date. The sound must burn itself into the ear and the hero into the heart of the player. In order for this to happen and for an arcade game to become popular and successful, it must meet certain requirements: The controls must be intuitive, the game mechanics self-explanatory, and the course of the game motivating. Or rather - this is a recognized video game standard - they come to three lives, which are usually lost too fast, so coin after coin ends up in the machine. And, with so many levels available, you’ll be entertained for weeks and weeks! Depending on the game, you can use your mouse and/or keyboard to control the in-game action. The gaming heroes of the 1980s are born in the arcade - they are the protagonists of videogame machines that come to life on flickering TV tubes through the insertion of a coin. Our bubble games include a large selection of arcade and strategy challenges. Having to collect health pickups feels rather archaic in the age of regenerating health systems, especially when death doesn’t have any real consequence apart from setting you back mere seconds – maybe a minute at the most. There’s also some frustration caused by the health system. For instance, once you’ve cleared an area of enemies, it’s then devoid of life if you return, which limits your fun until you complete the game and begin once again in the unlockable Challenge Mode. It’s safe to say that Ratchet & Clank is the closest we’ve come to Pixar levels of graphics and animation yet, and it really brings the characters and worlds to life.įor the most part, Ratchet & Clank’s traditional gameplay gives it a welcoming sense of familiarity, like slipping on a warm pair of slippers that you’ve had for years, but there are a few game mechanics of yesteryear that are less welcome. The draw distance is mightily impressive with almost the whole level being in view at once, and the environments are pleasingly busy, with indigenous lifeforms, plants, trees and buildings lining the linear pathways and corridors. Honestly, they are all absolutely gorgeous. What really strikes you as you land on each and every planet though is just how good they look. Once you land on a planet, your spaceship’s landing pad acts as a hub area, with differing linear routes heading out in various directions perhaps a cave behind you, a forest to your right and a factory to your left, each with its own secrets to find and objectives to complete. This makes it very straight-forward to keep track of your progress, and hopping between planets to resume objectives or take on new ones is very simple. Completing these objectives then unlocks more planets and sometimes more missions on planets you’ve visited before, all displayed nicely on the planet select screen. Each planet has a different set of objectives, which usually include a story-related mission or two, a small number of hidden gold bolts to find that unlock extras, and a smattering of optional objectives and side quests such as completing hoverboard races or collecting RYNO cards. Once we’re free to set off on adventures of our own choosing, we’re also handed the keys to Ratchet’s space ship, which is our transport between the different planets we can visit. Suffice to say, whether you’ve played the 2002 original or not, you’ll still enjoy the story as much as a newcomer. Some of the less obvious commands are explained by Quark’s narration, and his re-telling of the story explains both why we are playing (roughly) the same story again, as well as why there are some differences. This leads us to our missions, and cleverly, the “Tutorial” level is disguised as ranger scout try-outs. Soon after, we meet Clank, and for fans of the series it’s an exciting moment as the kind-hearted Ratchet offers to fix-up his charming new friend. Our first steps as Ratchet are with him as a young buck, keen to join up as one of Captain Quark’s ranger scouts and his enthusiasm is adorable. It may seem obvious, but despite everything else in this game, it’s the bonds between these two characters – and the bonds between us and them – that really make this game tick. Ratchet’s big floppy, furry ears flounce and flail their way across the levels with each hair being visibly affected by the surroundings, and Clank, as always, looks super-sharp and remains just the cutest little robot you ever saw. As you’d expect, the PS4 helps make both Ratchet and Clank look exceptional. Captain Quark recounts the tale of our heroes’ first meeting and of how they came to know Quark himself and the evil Dr. Ratchet & Clank is a loose re-telling of the duo’s first adventures together, which we originally saw back in 2002. "I Can Transform Ya" stirs up an android racket with synthesizers and guitars. Yet several tracks strike a more aggressive stance, a teen artist growing into manhood, and no doubt will sound fantastic on a dance floor with a booming speaker system. He poses on the cover like a futuristic rocker with a can of spray paint in one robotic hand and a guitar in the other, though the music isn't nearly as radical as that image implies. Brown has referenced Michael Jackson and Prince as influences on his new work, but his sound also borrows from the cross-genre experiments of Kanye West, Saul Williams and Lil Wayne. He had a hand in writing 12 of the 13 tracks on "Graffiti," and hunted for beats that value atmosphere as much as propulsion. Once a coltish boy-next-door who made mildly suggestive R&B for teens and young adults, Brown is trying to refashion his image as a cutting-edge artist ? or as cutting edge as a guy who already has sold millions of albums can get. He would've been better off staying silent, or avoiding the topic altogether on an album that includes several top-notch pieces of innocuous dance music. He and his handlers should have known that every move he makes will be judged against his real-life actions, and anything he says ? short of a contrite apology ? will be viewed with extreme skepticism. The inconsistent and sometimes contradictory tone of Brown's album suggests he jumped back too soon after committing a serious crime and bearing the brunt of a public-relations nightmare. Like Rihanna, Brown aims to expand his music beyond hip-hop-flavored R&B by embracing Euro-disco, Goth-rock and new wave.Īnd like Rihanna, he addresses their relationship.īut whereas his ex-girlfriend used her album to express her hurt and anger, an outpouring of emotional truth rather than a he-said, she-said publicÂrelations manifesto, Brown turns "Graffiti" into a curious mix of self-pity and accusation when he isn't simply partying as if he's already moved on. 8, only months after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna and was sentenced to five years probation, one year of counseling and six months of community service. The 20-year-old singer's third album, "Graffiti," arrives Dec. Two weeks ago, Rihanna delivered a brilliant album, "Rated R," that doubled as a thinly veiled, emotionally turbulent reflection on her ill-fated romance with Chris Brown. CHRIS BROWN "Graffiti" (Jive) 1 star (out of 4) The protagonist then returns to the Time Nest after defeating Great Ape Nappa and Great Ape Vegeta, and correcting history. During the battle, Trunks and his partner, the protagonist from the first Xenoverse game, try to capture Turles, but he escapes before the Time Patroller can stop him. Meanwhile, Towa and Mira, who've caused history to change, have gathered allies, including Turles, Lord Slug, and a mysterious masked Saiyan, later revealed to be Goku's father, Bardock, from different parts of the timeline.ĭuring the Attack of the Saiyans Saga, Turles attempts to intercept Goku to prevent him from assisting the Z Fighters against Nappa and Vegeta, only to be stopped by the combined forces of the Time Patroller and Goku. After meeting Elder Kai, they are granted their first mission, which is to correct Goku's battle with Raditz after he's been enhanced by dark magic. On the way there, they meet the Supreme Kai of Time, a deity who watches over time, and her bird, TokiToki. Two years after the events of Dragon Ball Xenoverse, the protagonist receives a special mission from Elder Kai, which involves correcting history after it has changed. This section's plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed. Players may also select a premade avatar to serve as the "Hero" if they choose not to transfer save data. This results in the player's custom character from the previous game appearing as Toki Toki City's "Hero" in the middle of the square. Additionally, players are able to transfer their save data from Dragon Ball Xenoverse. The player can use different kinds of ki blasts (Power, Homing, Rush, Paralyze and Bomb), and the ki blast type depends on the player's race or Super Soul. The game also has a training mode called Training School. Multiplayer servers are now able to hold up to 3000 players at once. Players also have a much greater role in the story, as their choices can affect how the story unfolds. The game also features race-specific quests, minigames, and transformations (the latter of which was available only to Saiyans in the first game, via the Super Saiyan forms). Xenoverse 2 is the fourth Dragon Ball video game to feature character customization, and allows players to choose from five races: Humans, Saiyans, Majins, Namekians and Frieza's race, each with different strengths and weaknesses. Some skills will have to be learned through masters, like the previous game, some of whom are found exclusively in these extra hubs. Players are also able to travel to other hubs such as the Namekian Village and Frieza's ship. Players are able to freely traverse the hub world, and in some areas are capable of flying, once they have unlocked the ability to fly. As reported by the creators of the game, Conton City is seven times larger than Toki-Toki City. It is primarily set in 3D battle arenas modeled after notable locations in the Dragon Ball universe, with the central hub being an expanded version of Toki-Toki City, known as Conton City. The game is very similar to its predecessor in terms of gameplay. And this time, Fury is goin’ down for good. But if he’s out then… Natalia’s in danger! This LEGO adventure has a completely original story and fully-voiced characters. Darwin expresses his guilt over losing the watch, but Gumball tells them that they should just forget about it and ignore their emotions. In the end, Gumball's eyes pop out, and Marvin tells them to get off his lawn.Īt the school lunchroom, Gumball and Darwin have lunch. As one last attempt, Gumball asks how Marvin can turn down a crying child, then tries to cry hard when Marvin points out that he is not crying. Marvin explains that it is polemic justice. At this, Gumball quietly asks Darwin about why he gave it to a Finklehimer of all people. However, Marvin insists that the watch belongs to his family, the Finklehimers. Gumball and Darwin go to Marvin's front yard and beg for the watch. In response, Richard tells them that he loves them. Gumball lies and tells him that he was talking to Darwin about how much they liked the watch. Suddenly, Richard appears with them, hugging them and quietly asking them what they are talking about. They start arguing about who should tell Richard about what happened with the watch. This makes Gumball worried, and says to Darwin that he should not have given the watch to "some random guy." Darwin replies that he only did so because he thought that Gumball was trying to get rid of it, and this worries Gumball all the more when he is confronted with telling Richard about the watch. In their bedroom, Darwin tells Gumball that he gave the watch to an old man. Then he sees his brother at the end of a hallway, doing "magic fingers" before disappearing from view. The latter becomes frustrated when he sees that the watch is still with him, and even more frustrated when Gumball disappears from sight. When Gumball shows empty hands, and tells Darwin to check his hands instead. Then Darwin asks Gumball to check his hands, hinting that he had tricked him while they were shaking hands. To this, Gumball agrees and both of them shake hands. The deal is that he will keep the watch, but if Richard offers them a better gift, he gets to keep that gift. While walking in the school hallway, Gumball is suddenly rushed on by Darwin who offers a deal. When Darwin realizes that he had been tricked by his brother (as Gumball does not wear shoes), Gumball tells him that "he who holds it, owns it," and Darwin is forced to keep the watch. He tells Gumball that he declined to have it since it was "busted up cowboy junk." Gumball then asks Darwin to hold the watch and pretends to tie his shoelaces. Darwin reveals that he was also offered the watch before Gumball received it. He shows the watch to his brother and says that it is useless since it cannot tell time at all (the watch actually having roman numerals which Gumball does not know how to read). In the next scene, Gumball is on the bus with Darwin. He finally ends his discussion with Gumball by giving him the watch, following family tradition. He explains that the watch was fought over by the Wattersons and the Finklehimers, explaining his father's victory at a yodeling contest and him giving it to Richard when he was still a young boy. The episode begins with Richard telling Gumball the story about a watch, one of the Wattersons' heirlooms. — The Amazing World of Gumball Season 3 The Amazing World of Gumball ÂĪngelina Espinoza on Aliq The Amazing World Of Gumball Season 1 1080p Web Dl X264 55l.Important details about the plot or story are up ahead Melissa Burden on The Amazing World Of Gumball Season 3 The Amazing World Of Gumball. The Amazing World Of Gumball Season 3 The Amazing World Of Gumball From Minecraft Dungeons to Call of Duty: Warzone, the Raider kept up with whatever I could throw at it. Benchmarks are only one reference point, however, so I spent a lot of time gaming on the Raider. Here are those results: Across the board, the GE66 Raider took care of business. But I happen to have a Razer Blade 15 Advanced on hand, and it's similarly spec'd. IGN recently reworked our benchmark guide, so we don't have many data points to compare. The Raider starts there, with MSI adding 32GB of 2666MHz memory, 1TB of NVMe SSD storage, and a 15.6-inch FHD 300Hz display. Performance and gamingI've seen a handful of gaming laptops come across my desk in the last few months, all of which have boasted the same core internals: 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10980HK and an Nvidia RTX 2080 Super w/Max-Q. Again, how the GE66 looks on the outside is not at all how it looks once you open it up. The outer shell of the Raider is silver, and has some subtle geometric protrusions where the hinge meets the rear of the deck, but is otherwise rather boring. On the right side of the housing is an SD card reader, and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. There's also a headphone jack on that same side. Speaking of the sides, on the left side is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port and a USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 port that can handle up to 20GB of data speeds. It allows you to hide extra connections behind an opened lid, instead of plugging things like external drives and monitors into the side of the housing. I've said it before, but having ports on the back of a laptop is one of my favorite features. On the back, you'll find a miniDisplayPort, a USB-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, a Killer E3100 Gigabit Ethernet jack, HDMI 2.0 port and the power connection. There's an abundance of ports on the GE66, spanning three different sides. The full-size keyboard has individually lit RGB keys, with a touchpad that's centered with the keyboard, not the laptop's deck. There's a 1080p webcam centered above the 15.6-inch display, which has narrow bezels on either side, with thicker bezels on the top and bottom. You can customize its color scheme in MSI's software, but during my testing, I left it at the default rainbow of colors just because it was mesmerizing. On the front is the RGB Aurora Mystic Lightbar looks downright cool. But once you boot it up, the entire front edge of the deck lights up, along with the keyboard. When powered off or with the lid shut, the laptop looks incredibly bland, dull, and boring.
Then, in your photo editing software, invert the image. Make sure you don't set them too tight to the histogram or you may get clipping. Colours should be close, but you may need to go in and tweak the Negafix curves to make sure you're not getting clipping in highlights and shadows.Īlternatively, scan your negs as 48-bit positive, and before scanning set the black and white points on each of the three channels (R, G and B) using Silverfast's levels function. You need to choose the right kind of film, then do one or two scans to see how it's working. Try using the Negafix feature in Silverfast. The green tint sounds like the orange mask is not being compensated for. Your travails are only to be expected at the start of your scanning journey! It's a long road, but rewarding for the end result. So are there any Plustek "power users" out there that I might be able to pick the brain(s) of to see if I can speed up my scanning? The other night I was able to color correct and clean them up a bit after importing them into Aperture, but I'm thinking that it would be way easier to correct this up front that to have to heavily pp each scan. (The pictures are 15+ years old, but were taken at different times, indoors and outdoors, etc - so I know it wasn't just the temperature of the lights back then.) Also, the negatives have some nicks & scratches in them that show up on the scans - but I seem to remember the guy from Plustek telling me some little tip to help clean up some of that, either during scanning or in the SilverFast software afterwards. I tried going off the very vague instructions that came with it (and my memory), and I got it going the other night, but everything I scanned had a very green tint to it. I've now pulled it out again, and am ready to start scanning a bunch more selections from my 20+ years of negatives. (I get the impression it's a pretty small outfit, based on the few discussions I had with them.)Īnyway, I scanned the few photos I needed for back then, and then it's pretty much just sat in its case for the last year or so. I had a little trouble getting it going back then, and I contacted the folks at Plustek out in California and got some free phone support to get it up and running. A little over a year ago I bought a Plustek OpticFilm 7600i film/slide scanner from B&H.
